10 Times WWE Legends Got Squashed
4. Brock Lesnar (Vs. Goldberg - Survivor Series 2016)
To wash the taste of the last match out of our mouths, let's have a look at a squash match that does make sense in hindsight.
The build up to Survivor Series 2016 relied heavily on Goldberg and Brock Lesnar's long awaited rematch. (For context: The two stunk out the building at WrestleMania XX twelve years earlier as both men were leaving the company, so neither they nor the audience gave a damn about the match). Fans were looking forward to seeing if the two could erase the blot on their legacies and put on a barn-busting, crowd-pleasing match. And they did!
Just not here.
While the two would have a pulsating, hard-hitting brawl at WrestleMania 33 the following year, at Survivor series their match consisted of exactly four moves: Lesnar picking up Goldberg and dumping him in the corner of the ring; Goldberg spearing Lesnar; Goldberg spearing Lesnar again; and a Jackhammer on Lesnar to finish it off.
What seemed like deliberate trolling at the time actually turned out to be pretty good business from the WWE. The company followed up on this match by having Goldberg eliminate Lesnar from the Royal Rumble, fuelling the perception that Goldberg had Lesnar's number and building the hype for their WrestleMania rematch.
Also, as Goldberg's disastrous bout with The Undertaker in Saudi Arabia showed, his matches are best when they're short and sweet, which this certainly was. Two Spears, a Jackhammer and, once the initial shock wore off, we were partying like it was 1998 all over again.
