10 Times WWE Made Us Ashamed To Be Wrestling Fans

In another transparent attempt to boost ratings by promising “adult content” live on TV, Edge decided to celebrate his first WWE Championship win by having sex with girlfriend Lita in the middle of the ring on Monday Night Raw.

The segment, which occupied the main event portion of the show, was heavily promoted throughout the broadcast, especially by a rabid Jerry Lawler on commentary. Of course, anybody tuning in hoping for hardcore nudity was disappointed, as Edge and Lita climbed under the covers of the helpfully-provided bed in the ring, before kicking them about to simulate their passion. Before long, their tryst was interrupted by Ric Flair and John Cena, thankfully sparing us of any more of this.

While this wasn’t as tasteless as some other entries, such as exploiting real-life tragedies, the low level of intelligence that WWE assumed their audience to have to promote such a segment was depressing. More depressing was the fact that it actually worked, as it was the highest rated portion of Monday Night Raw in over a year. You’ll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator.
