When WWE announced WrestleMania 25 would host a 25-woman battle royal to crown Miss WrestleMania, Santino Marella wanted in the bout in the worst of ways. After all else failed, he showed up to 'Mania in complete drag as his alter ego Santina. At the time, the WWE Universe was into Marella's humor and, by large, cheered when he was the last woman standing in the ring.

Nevertheless, Santina's appearance in the battle royal called out the problematic way WWE managed its women. When they weren't strutting their stuff, the women were often relegated to short matches, usually with a juvenile stipulation attached. The fact Marella's victory came off as entertaining, especially to the big wigs, showed the Divas division was not taken quite as seriously as the men's.

WWE would later show it somewhat understood the problem with Santina and the division when he appeared in the 2020 Women's Royal Rumble to be quickly pummeled and eliminated by women who represented the evolution of their division. Gone were the days of evening gown match days. However, WWE's jab wasn't quite enough to make the pain go away, as it was revealed several women might have been unhappy with Santina filling up a spot.
