7. Bruno Sammartino’s Comeback Gets Ruined

How do you book the return of a beloved ex-World Champion who was once the top babyface in the territory and a darling figure amongst hardcore fans? You split the spotlight and try to piggy back the story by putting more focus on his significantly less-talented son, of course.

Yikes.

David Sammartino didn't have the same organic connection to WWF fans as Bruno, but his 1984-1985 run in the promotion pretended he did. Being brutally honest, Bruno's comeback shouldn't have been some misplaced bid to get his boy over as the second coming.

Bruno likely needed to work tags rather than singles by that stage in his life/career, but...couldn't Vince McMahon have picked out somebody else? In fairness, Bruno likely went to bat for his son and made sure he'd play a part even when it was crystal clear that federation fans didn't give a toss about anything he was doing.

One of the best comebacks ever was sullied.
