Since the very start of the character's run, wrestling fans were told why Kane wore a mask. The sole reason was due to horrible disfigurement caused by painful burns to his face. The flame-like pattern on the mask itself was designed to reflect that, Kane had been through real torture and didn't want anybody to see his face.

When he infamously unmasked on the June 23, 2003 edition of Raw, there was a lot of intrigue. The amateur make-up job was a disappointment, and Kane just looked like he was covered in soot more than anything. He didn't appear disfigured to the extent people had been led to believe.

Worse, the next week he appeared without any of the 'burns' visible beforehand. There was a real lack of logical explanation for this, it was like WWE didn't even try to give a reason for it. In one fell swoop, years of mystery surrounding Kane was washed away with this plot development.

Kane unmasking and the story of his burns should have been drawn out and a real focal point, but they were ignored quickly.
