4. Mabel

Wrestling is all about freedom of expression, and you’re free to wrestle as whoever you want, but there are no two ways about it: call yourself “Mabel”, and the first thing we’re going to picture is a doddery old lady. If you’re in fact a colossal wrestler with a community outreach gimmick, that’s liable to cause a little confusion.

As far as spectacles go, they didn’t get much better than Mabel. The man later known as Viscera (later the equally regrettable Big Daddy V) was extraordinary to look at, a humongous individual on both axes. He was more sprightly than you might imagine for a superstar of his stature, and in Viscera would go on to find a gimmick that suited his frankly frightening face a lot better. Under the Mabel moniker, though, they never gave him a chance. Whoever you are, your favourite wrestler is never going to be “Mabel”. It’s just not going to happen.

Mabel went on to win the 1995 King Of The Ring tournament, leading to a viewer-haemorrhaging feud with then-champion Diesel, before being kidnapped by The Undertaker and rebranded as Viscera. He never took centre stage again, but ditching the name Mabel must have been a relief.
