10 Times WWE Screwed Up With Seth Rollins
2. Doubling Down
In the seven months where Seth Rollins was out to rehab his knee injury, Roman Reigns became the top guy in WWE and fans hated it. Reigns got booed through three title wins, multiple main events (including an embarrassing one at WrestleMania), and dozens of promos. After 'Mania, Reigns was put into a feud with AJ Styles, which did his popularity no further favors.
Reigns defeated Styles at Extreme Rules 2016, but was attacked by Rollins after the match in "The Architect's" triumphant return. Fans went crazy, and the writing was on the wall - portraying Rollins as the babyface and Reigns as the heel in the feud would not only be the right thing to do, but it could actually help business. For the first time since CM Punk's feud with John Cena, WWE might have a hot program on its hands.
Of course, turning Reigns heel would interfere with the prime directive, so the idea was never even considered. The evening after Extreme Rules, Rollins came out on Raw to insult all of the fans who clamored for his return, doubling down on his heel persona.
Fans weren't angry, they were just disappointed, and that made them stop caring about Rollins and his comeback.
