Jeff Hardy was scheduled to take part in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship at the 2008 pay-per-view. The popular star had flirted with the gold all throughout the year, and Hardy was being accepted as a legitimate main event star. Leave it to WWE to cause a panicked uproar after presenting a worked news story as potentially real.

To build the idea that Hardy had been attacked before the show by an unknown assailant, WWE.com published a breaking news story that claimed Hardy had been found unconscious in a Boston hotel stairwell at 3 AM.

Given Hardy's history of wellness troubles, and the number of wrestlers that had been found dead in hotel rooms over the years, the story alarmed many folks who thought it was legitimate, and feared the worst. It wasn't the best way to re-introduce Edge after an injury layoff.
