Product-wise, 2024 was WWE's best year since the peak of the Attitude Era. The roster was on a different level, wrestling with more passion than most of them had ever known; the match quality was through the roof; the stories connected without peaking too early or too late. Earnestly, it was the sort of WWE that made us, as wrestling fans, embrace the sport in the first place.
But what a f*cking farce of a Money in the Bank.
Drew McIntyre won the case, a safe choice and one that certainly raised eyebrows, with Seth Rollins challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship on the same show. Indeed, McIntyre pounced, injecting himself into the Rollins-Damian Priest clash, but just as quickly, so did CM Punk, ultimately costing both Drew and Seth the match.
As a story, it was the latest chapter in WWE's year-best - but the Money in the Bank briefcase should always be used for more than just advancing a pre-existing tale. Same-night cash-ins have been a staple of the briefcase since Kane did so in 2010. However, analyse Drew's against the rest. They created a story: Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair in 2017, Liv Morgan vs. Ronda Rousey in 2022, the aforementioned Kane vs. Rey Mysterio in 2010.
In 2024, the Money in the Bank briefcase was thrown in the bin, sitting idly beside the 24/7 Championship.
