10 Times WWE Treated Home Town Talent Like Garbage
1. The British Bulldog
Another Michaels story, another member of the Hart family, another screwjob.
The Birmingham Screwjob is less well known that its Montreal equivalent, but arguably shows Shawn Michaels in an even less favourable light. Shawn and Bret had nuclear heat between them, and the British Bulldog (Bret's real life brother-in-law) found himself as collateral damage in their ongoing war.
The British Bulldog, having being told that he was going to win, dedicated the match to his terminally ill sister Tracey in the run up to the show. However, unbeknownst to him, Shawn Michaels had gotten in Vince McMahon's ear and convinced him that it would be good business to have Shawn go over instead, setting up a rematch down the line. Vince agreed and the Bulldog dropped the European title to Michaels in Birmingham, much to the fury of his fellow countrymen and the genuine despair of his sister.
The rematch would never happen. The Bulldog left the WWF after Montreal, only returning briefly during the middle of Shawn's four year hiatus from the ring.
Wrestling is all about a clash between egos, and in the 90's WWF no-one had a bigger one than Shawn Michaels.
