10 Times WWE Treated Home Town Talent Like Garbage
2. Bret Hart
You knew it had to be somewhere on the list.
The Montreal Screwjob was a tale of titanic egos clashing behind the scenes. However, Bret Hart recently admitted on Stone Cold's Broken Skull Sessions that his supposed refusal to lose in his hometown was a smokescreen. The real reason he wouldn't drop the belt stemmed from a discussion he'd had with Shawn Michaels in the lead up to Montreal.
Bret told Shawn he'd be willing to drop the belt to him before he left, but Shawn fired back that he'd never do the same for him. Nobody could ever accuse Bret Hart of lacking pride, and Shawn slapping away his proffered olive branch caused the already substantial rift between them to become irreparable. Vince McMahon obviously sided with Shawn and the rest, as they say, is history.
Bret Hart gave thirteen years of his life to WWE, and gave wrestling fans all over the world some of the best matches in the history of the business. Regardless of your personal feelings towards the man, that WWE resorted to screwing Bret over rather than come to terms with him will forever be a black mark against the company and its leader.
