10 Times WWE Went Back On Big Decisions
5. Mr. McMahon Limo Explosion
Just a few months prior to that long-lost son malarkey, WWE had decided to sensationally kill off the Mr McMahon character. And, as ever, they went all-in on it.
On the Jun 11 showing of Raw, the show ended with McMahon entering a limo that was promptly blown to smithereens. WWE.com then published an article noting that the boss was "presumed dead" before the following week’s Raw saw Stephanie McMahon announce that the Jun 25 show would stage a celebration in memory of her dad’s life.
Instead, though, the memorial show opened with Mr McMahon himself standing in the ring, acknowledging his demise had been a storyline whilst addressing the real-life passing of Chris Benoit, at a time before the details of his horrific double-murder suicide were known. Understandably, the limo story was nixed.
Mind, even before that on-screen admission, the company had been forced to admit to CNBC that the angle had been staged and wasn’t in fact real. Some viewers had apparently forgotten that wrestling was, you know, scripted, leading to people calling in to the company offices for updates, including future US president Donald Trump. Just let that one sink in for a minute.
