After a tumultuous summer – more on that later – it was revealed in early August of 2007 that Mr McMahon was being served with a paternity suit for an illegitimate child that he sired. In other words, McMahon had a mystery long-lost child.

Mr Kennedy was initially teased to be the bastard offspring, which could’ve been a decent pay-off, though it was ultimately announced on the Sep. 10 showing of Raw that Hornswoggle was McMahon’s illegitimate child.

Somehow, that wasn’t quite as impactful.

This prompted a "tough love" angle in which Hornswoggle was put into matches he had no hope of winning, meaning a storyline that could’ve been used to push an up-and-coming name instead gave us Hornswoggle vs. the Great Khali on PPV.

After five months of such shenanigans, and in what came across as a bid to sweep the whole thing under the rug, JBL told McMahon that Finlay was actually Hornswoggle’s father and the whole thing had been a ruse designed to make McMahon look like a fool.

Mission accomplished, though perhaps not in the way they’d intended...
