10 Times WWE Wrestlers Should Have Refused To Read The Script
5. Diamond Dallas Page - Sara's Stalker (Raw, 18th June 2001)
DDP’s WWE debut was bizarre from the get-go. He debuted behind a balaclava, mimicking The Undertaker’s biker entrance. However, it was a genuinely shocking moment when DDP revealed he was the stalker who’d terrorised The Undertaker’s wife Sara.
Near the promo’s open, DDP addressed the fans: “Now those of you who know me, are asking yourself the question, why?”. This evidenced the writers' awareness that these words and actions went against the popular character built up in WCW.
After building ‘Taker up as “the biggest, the meanest, the baddest dog in the yard”, DDP referenced ‘Taker telling Stone Cold Steve Austin if anyone messed with his family he’d “make them famous”.
A man in his forties emphatically yelling “duh” was cringe, as was the tepid “idiot” insult. In a line seemingly designed to rubbish DDP’s WCW career, he stated Austin was already famous but that it “got him to thinking”. If the implication that he was a nobody was unclear, DDP ended the promo screeching “‘Taker, I’m begging you, make me famous”. ‘The Master of the Diamond Cutter’ deserved better.
