10 Times WWE Wrestlers Should Have Refused To Read The Script
6. Brock Lesnar – Temper Tantrum (SmackDown, 19th February 2004)
At No Way Out 2004, Brock Lesnar lost his WWE Championship to Eddie Guerrero, following some assistance from Bill Goldberg. On the following SmackDown, Lesnar vented all his feelings in a promo more shameful than the loss itself.
Brock’s voice was whiny from the outset, as he rambled about having the night off but showing up anyway. His scripted rant that the belt was his life and Guerrero didn’t “appreciate it at all” was both limp and overemotional. While Lesnar being a novice, and without Paul Heyman, can be blamed for some of the cringe, such as claiming Guerrero “stoled” his championship, the script takes much of the culpability.
90% of Lesnar’s lines were repetitive comments about Guerrero not deserving the championship. One diversion being a racist joke that Guerrero would pawn the title because “that’s what all Mexicans do”. Another involved Lesnar addressing his heart, a massive swerve from the monster who won over fans.
A final bizarre choice was to have Lesnar, teary-eyed and on his knees, beg for a WrestleMania match against Goldberg. Lesnar ended the promo sobbing uncontrollably, masked only by his theme.
