10 TNA Rejects Doing Pretty Well For Themselves Elsewhere

8. Mil Muertes

The man Lucha Underground fans will know as Mil Muertes signed with TNA in 2007, and was immediately given something of a push. Muertes was billed as Judas Mesias, the kayfabe son of James Mitchell. This basically meant that he was going to feud with Abyss and be involved in hardcore matches most of the time. Sure enough, Mesias made his debut by getting involved in Abyss' business (Abyssness?).

The feud would drag on, Abyss winning the final match at Against All Odds in 2008. After this bout Mesias was released from the company, many saying 'good riddance' in the process. Little did they know that a few years later he would reappear on the western wrestling consciousness as one of the most imposing heel forces in modern times.

Mil Muertes was Lucha Underground's first real heel. The show was (and is) full of anti-hero types, but for the first season (and the beginning of the second) Muertes was the unstoppable heel champion. He won that belt by defeating Prince Puma (Ricochet) at the first Ultima Lucha, capping off a season of performances that confused those who remembered the Judas Mesias days.

He was also the inaugural AAA Mega Champion (As El Mesias), going on to win that title four times.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
