Speaking of cult followings, few stars in TNA were as simultaneously popular with the fans and underused by the booking team as Desmond Wolfe (familiar to ROH fans as former World Champion Nigel McGuinness).

Debuting in 2009, the Brit enjoyed an electrifying feud with Kurt Angle, proving his immense skill to a wide audience after impressing on the independent scene for a number of years. He was utilised by TNA as a reliable in-ring talent, capable of putting on a great match with just about anybody, yet never saw his amazing talents rewarded with a title reign.

The lack of ambition shown by TNA towards Wolfe was exposed upon the introduction of a Championship Ranking system based entirely on fan voting. Desmond led from start to finish, surpassing stars such as Jeff Hardy, Sting, AJ Styles and Kurt Angle. Forced to give him a title shot, the promotion had him lose a throwaway match on Impact against Rob Van Dam.
