10 Topics "Crossface" Movie Needs To Address
7. The Kevin-Nancy-Chris Love Triangle
In order to be more than just a tabloid-style sensation, "Crossface" needs to focus on the victims of the tragedy. To do that, it has to show how Chris and Nancy Benoit met.
The story, in true wrestling fashion, is bizarre. Benoit was feuding with WCW wrestler/booker Kevin Sullivan, who was married to Nancy first. She worked for WCW under the name "Woman", accompanying her husband to the ring as a valet. In order to give his feud with Benoit some extra gravitas, he booked an angle where Nancy left him for "The Crippler".
Sullivan decided to take things a step further. He had Chris and Nancy travel together on the road in order to sell the authenticity of the angle. Their proximity eventually led to a real-life romance, with Nancy leaving Sullivan for Benoit.
Needless to say, that's not what Sullivan had planned to happen. The feud still continued, and Benoit beat and retired Sullivan as planned, but there was lots of bad blood left as a result.
