6. Last Rites Match - Destination X 2007
The Last Rites match between Sting and Abyss may well go down as the worst in TNA's history. And that's saying a lot.
There was no explanation of what this match involved, only vignettes like Sting lying in a coffin ruminating on death. See, Sting felt Abyss had been corrupted, so he had to kill him so he could see the light.
We wish we were joking. Sting, babyface extraordinaire, was going to kill someone to save him.
On the night of the match, the rules were finally explained. Competitors had to call the coffin - sorry, DEATH BED - down from the ceiling on cables, whereupon you take your opponent, put them in the DEATH BED, and close the lid.
The match was a wreck. At one point, the crowd is chanting 'Fire Russo.' Sting blades his head from a shot to the gut. Despite Abyss 'struggling' to lift one of the tombstones, Sting easily shatters it with his bat a few minutes later. At one point, the arena goes dark and blue light and smoke appear, blocking the view.
Abyss chokeslams Sting onto the coffin, then wastes time setting up an elaborate spot with chairs instead of closing the lid and winning. Sting reverses, wins, and calls for the DEATH BED to rise, but the cables can't lift Abyss and Sting and the DEATH BED's weight, so it just kinda hangs out there in the ring.
All involved should be embarrassed.
