10 Truly Upsetting Moments In The History Of The Intercontinental Title

9. Bob Holly's 'Ghost' Title Reign

On the whole, a lot of fans would like to forget the dark days of 1995, when the then-WWF was really struggling to connect with audiences and create bankable, money-drawing stars. When people discuss how poor things are now, it's a good idea to advise them to go and check out some of the stuff the company were pedaling in the mid-90's. 'Action Zone' was a minor TV show at the time, one on which anything of note rarely happened. During a routine Intercontinental Title match between defending champion Jeff Jarrett and Bob 'Sparky Plugg' Holly, the latter would come out on top, even though Jarrett's foot was clearly on the rope during the deciding fall. Thus, the reign wasn't officially recognised, and the title was vacated. Jarrett would beat Holly the next week on the same show, leading everyone to wonder exactly what the purpose of the 'ghost' change was? It wasn't as though Bob Holly was a big deal at the time either, so this one left a lot of people scratching their heads, bemoaning what the Intercontinental belt used to mean.
