10 Truly Upsetting Moments In The History Of The Intercontinental Title

10. The British Bulldog Has His Reign Cut Short

To this day, Bret Hart considers his match against Davey Boy Smith at Summerslam 1992 as his best performance ever. It's widely reported that Smith was a nervous wreck before the event, and forgot crucial parts as it was in progress, blowing up badly near the end. Advising his pal to listen and follow his lead, Bret put the UK grappler over in the biggest way possible. Capturing the Intercontinental Title should have helped launch The British Bulldog into the stratosphere, but his reign would last a little under a few months, before being ended by Shawn Michaels at a Saturday Night's Main Event taping in October, '92. It was a shocking moment, and sad for fans of all ages to see the Bulldog's big run with a major singles title cut drastically short. Apparently, the reason for quick shift in titleholder was due to Vince McMahon looking to release Bulldog from contract. The Brit had been violating company policy, receiving shipments of Human Growth Hormone, and McMahon was in the process of trying to clean up his promotion, one which was under stern investigation from the US Federal Government.
