10 UFC Fighters Who Injured Themselves To Victory

7. Eddie Alvarez' Broken Nose (Vs. Gilbert Melendez)

Legendary boxer George Foreman famously decreed that a fighter should never blow his nose in between rounds. The reason? Eddie Alvarez' experience will shed some light on the matter.

At UFC 188, Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez were in the thick of the first round of their titanic battle when Melendez caught Alvarez with a seismic elbow. The connection broke his nose and the build up of blood was bothering him to the point where he broke Foreman's golden rule.

As he blew, the inevitable pressure pumped blood gushing through the impaired veins found within the soft tissue bordering his eye-ball and forced the eye to shut via swelling.

It's a miracle that Alvarez managed to make it through the fight as he confessed to having little depth perception or awareness of how close Melendez was to him. Through his expert takedown ability, he magnificently fought back to a split decision win over his opponent.
