10 Unbelievable WrestleMania Matches That Almost Happened

9. Randy Savage Vs. Shawn Michaels - WrestleMania XII

When Randy Savage was confined to the broadcast table in early 1993, the legendary 'Macho Man' was largely put out to pasture in the WWF. Despite competing pretty regularly in-ring on the house show loop, Savage only wrestled on WWF TV a handful of times after 1992.

It was clear that McMahon saw Savage as being in the twilight of his career and wanted the elder statesmen to step aside in favour of a younger crop of stars. Sensing this shift in direction, 'Macho Man' made one final plea, with a spectacular idea that would send him into retirement for good.

According to his brother, Lanny Poffo, the former WWF Champion laid out an intricate exit strategy that saw him enter a two year feud with Shawn Michaels. The finale would see 'The Macho Man' lose a retirement match at WrestleMania XII and see him resigned to commentary for the rest of his career.

Michaels and Savage had crossed paths only a handful of times before, most notably on the European Tour of '92 during Savage's last run as WWF Champion. However, the two had never engaged in a legitimate programme on TV.

Savage saw HBK as the man to help him finally surpass the standard set by him and Steamboat at WrestleMania III. Sadly, Vince disagreed, prompting Savage to leave for WCW, never to return.
