10 Uncredited Architects Behind WWE’s Gigantic Success
9. Pat Patterson
When Pat Patterson first devised the Royal Rumble concept, Vince McMahon vetoed it immediately. He said it was "stupid". Nearly thirty years later, it remains the second most cherished institution in all of wrestling. It's a good job he has Vince McMahon's ear, and by his own admission has refused to play the role of "yes man". WWE would not be the same place without him.
Patterson's twist on the battle royal was genius. To this day, even though it has devolved into yet another vehicle with which to drive the Roman Reigns push, it is revered. Everything about it - the countdowns, the surprise entrants, its entire objective - is predicated on and carried by hope. It is Patterson's documented, eternal contribution to the wrestling business.
Slightly less known is Patterson's ability to lay out a match. Virtually every memorable, major WWE match has been constructed in part by Patterson. The very best of the story-driven WWE style is encoded with his DNA.
Chris Jericho is on record as admitting that Patterson taught him 90% of what he knows about wrestling psychology. The Rock has described him as an invaluable mentor, instrumental in the greatest matches and storylines of his career. Triple H added to the praise, proclaiming that Patterson is widely acknowledged as a genius in the business.
