Match of the Night: Ric Flair vs Triple H

WWE were ahead of their time with this concept, which allowed the fans at home to vote on stipulations and opponents for upcoming matches. Whilst outcomes are always predetermined, the ability to influence a show threw up some interesting chances for fans to ‘hijack’ a show. However, the options were reasonably uninspiring and somewhat story-led, so by choosing an alternate option would feel as if you were ruining the canon of what was being created in front of you. Nonetheless, this PPV highlighted talents’ ability to improvise and create something decent without an awful lot of preparation time, which has to be commended.

The show itself created some quite extraordinary moments: Big Show and Kane teaming up after losing the popular vote to Shawn Michaels (who went on to compete for the World Championship that night) to win the Tag Team Championships springs straight to mind. But for pure brutality and for the way a story of master vs student was reconstructed to demonstrate the beliefs of both athletes, Ric Flair vs Triple H in a steel cage for the Intercontinental Championship received the reaction of the night. It is undervalued just how much of themselves they left out on that ring floor that night.
