10 Underrated WWE Survivor Series Matches You Must Watch
10. Bob Backlund vs Bret Hart (Survivor Series 94)
This match for the WWF World Title had an interesting story going into it. The seeds for this submission match, the winner would be decided when a wrestler's manager threw in the towel, were sewn eleven years beforehand. In the months leading up to the match Bob snapped at Bret, the story being that he was still bitter that Arnold Skaaland threw in the towel for him and cost him the title against The Iron Sheik in 1983. Bob had Bret's troublemaking younger brother Owen in his corner and Bret had brother-in-law The British Bulldog in his. The match is a great, old-school style match that lasts thirty five minutes. The two technicians keep it on the mat in the early going and try to make the other submit. It is the definition of a slow burner but is undoubtedly absorbing. Bret was a master at slowly building up his matches and gradually getting the audience involved. Backlund, thanks to his attacks on The Hitman and everyone else in the promotion that year, drew incredible heat. After taking out Bulldog, Owen managed to convince his mother to throw in the towel with Bret locked in the crossface chickenwing while father Stu tried to pull her back. The result stunned the fans, who were furious with Owen. At ringside Vince lamented on the fact that Bret was screwed out of the title. If you look hard enough you can find some irony there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PMT56sN_kc
