The ECW Heavyweight Championship had an illustrious history before ending up as a hubcap in WWE.

From the bloody triangle battle between Terry Funk, Shane Douglas and Sabu to the paralysis inducing wars between Masato Tanaka and Mike Awesome, the ECW Championship was a well earned trophy, reserved for the fearless.

However, back when the 'E' in extreme stood for Eastern, ECW champions were of a more ordinary ilk.

Building the promotion around former WWF stars such as Tito Santana, Don Muraco and Jimmy Snuka - who became the inaugural ECW Champion in 1992 - ECW was a North Eastern promotion in search of an identity - which it eventually founder under Paul Heyman.

An aberration in the company's early history, Johnny Hotbody was the second ever ECW champion, beating the legendary Snuka in April of 1992.

An unspectacular regular of North East indies since the late '80s, Hotbody's reign last less than eight weeks before Snuka regained the title.

The championship went on to new heights following Shane Douglas' reign in 1994, Hotbody however, went on to become the first and fastest Triple Crown champion in ECW's history, becoming the inaugural Television champion in August and a tag team champion with Chris Candido in April 1993.
