10 Unexpected Betrayals At WWE Survivor Series

Sticking with the idea of singles matches, at number one I feel like I have no choice but to roll with the betrayal of all betrayals; that which took place at Survivor Series 1997 and was as real as it gets in wrestling.

With Bret Hart unwilling to drop the WWF Title on PPV in Canada, and with Vince McMahon unhappy with his refusal to play ball, the chairman took the rather drastic step of changing the outcome of the match on the fly, in front of a live PPV audience no less, and screwing Bret out of the match.

Deep into the contest, Shawn Michaels locked Bret in the sharpshooter, prompting Vince to call for the bell despite the fact that Bret never tapped, and thus the Montreal Screwjob was born.

Some may argue that it was Michaels who was guilty of a betrayal here, given his part in proceedings, or perhaps referee Earl Hebner was at fault since he was refereeing the match. Either way though, I think it’s safe to say that Bret was indeed betrayed by someone here, and as that this was a real-life backstabbing with no traces of kayfabe, I’d say that makes it a worthy candidate for top spot on this list.
