10 Unexpected Betrayals At WWE Survivor Series
3. Kurt Angle (2001)
Of course, with the Rock keeping the match alive after Jericho’s
betrayal, that meant that there was still time for yet another double-cross in
that classic Winner Take All bout from 2001.
And this time the tables were turned, because it was Team WWF who would enjoy a slice of luck in a second moment of madness, as Kurt Angle stabbed the Alliance in the back and gifted victory to the Rock.
With the referee down, the previously-eliminated Angle returned to the fray, seemingly to aid his teammate Austin, but instead he proceeded to clatter the champ with his own WWF title belt. The Rock was on hand to pick up the pieces for Team WWF, covering Austin for the victory and thus ending the entire Invasion angle.
A personal highlight from this exchange was Paul Heyman’s work on commentary. His famous last words of “here comes Kurt, thank God” were punctuated almost instantly by Angle’s betrayal, making the moment all the more emphatic and producing one of the most memorable finishes in Survivor Series history.
