10 Unfortunately-Timed WWE Releases

6. Chyna - 2001

Speaking of Chyna, she too deserves a mention for the circumstances surrounding her 2001 exit from the company.

Having returned to win the women’s title at WrestleMania X-seven, Chyna then retained her belt at Judgment Day in May, only to suddenly disappear from television shortly after. Some six months later, and after no further defences, the title was declared to be vacant before news broke that Chyna and her employers had mutually agreed to let her contract simply run out.

That in itself sounded strange enough, though the story becomes even more suspect when you factor in what was going on backstage.

Chyna has since claimed that 2001 was the year she found out that her one-time boyfriend, Triple H, had been having an affair with Stephanie McMahon (as in, the daughter of the chairman of the company). Mind, Triple H has, in turn, said that he and Chyna were no longer an item by the time he and Stephanie became romantically involved.

Ultimately, it’s a case of one person’s word against another’s, but whatever the truth of the matter is, the timing and nature of Chyna's release certainly raised one or two eyebrows.
