One of the more perplexing theories for WrestleMania 39 was if and how WWE would dethrone GUNTHER of the Intercontinental title. There was no unqualified reason for him to do so; he's provided a fitting aura for the workhorse title that has been sorely absent for years, doing so in calamitous means to enforce his Final Boss semblance.

Neither Sheamus nor Drew McIntyre toppled the dominant Austrian leviathan, a two-for-one Powerbomb succumbing both men to defeat as GUNTHER's expedition to 365 days continued. For Sheamus, this wasn't his first Intercontinental title rodeo vs. the former WALTER.

Requiring the title as the final piece of his Grand Slam puzzle, Sheamus has been in active pursuit of it since his latest Grand Slam accolade - a Tag Team title - was crossed off in December 2016. He's challenged for the Intercontinental title just three times since, and thrice has he been felled by GUNTHER. The first came at Clash at the Castle, where the realisation settled in that GUNTHER and Sheamus were compelled to do this forever, together. A second go-around saw Sheamus overthrown on the 7 October SmackDown, with WrestleMania 39 marking the third.

WWE can hold off on the cessation of GUNTHER's Intercontinental title for the time being; Sheamus may well be the right choice to end it, but a triple threat is no way for such a story to reach its climax.
