9. Over The Top, Off With The Top
The first-ever Over the Top, Off With the Top match took place on the June 6, 2000 episode of Raw. No Divas were involved in the actual in-ring action itself but were the centerpieces of the bout. Jerry "the King" Lawler represented real-life wife The Kat while Dean Malenko fought for Terri Runnels. Anytime one of the Superstars was tossed to the area floor, their chosen Diva would have to remove an article of clothing. The first to lose their top would be deemed the loser. The winners? The fans lucky enough to see the so-called "puppies" of their favorite Divas in all their glory. Lawler won the match and the time came for Terri to take off her bra but before she could show her assets off to the world, a shirt and tie-wearing Steven Richards appeared and censored the display of overt nudity. The crowd erupted into a chorus of boos and Richards instantly became of the of the most despised men in World Wrestling Entertainment. And rightfully so. It was the first, and last, match of its kind. It existed solely to introduce the fans to Richards' new character and would be difficult to pull off under any other circumstance. After all, how does one deliver on the promise of the stipulations without breaking the rules of live cable television? While censorship may be more relaxed than it was at one time and shows on channels such as FX and AMC push the limit nightly, there are still boundaries that cannot be crossed. Blatant nudity for nudity's sake is one of them. A match unlikely to ever happen again.
