The very first WrestleMania was a massive gamble. One that paid off gangbusters for Vince McMahon, to the point that the show is still being produced annually 40 years later, and we're still talking about it in lists like these. A proof of concept show, WrestleMania 1 set the standard for everything we would see in the coming years with one major exception.

In the main event, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan teamed with Mr. T to take on Rowdy Roddy Piper and Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. In doing so, this event became the only show in WrestleMania history to not have its grandest prize defended. In the 40 events following the inaugural show, a world championship had headlined 34 times. Nowadays, WWE includes the women's titles as part of their world championships, and while the women's division was a lot more respected than it was during the Rock n Wrestling Era as opposed to the Attitude or Ruthless Aggression Eras, the titles did not carry the same prestige as they do today when the women's division could easily main event any big show.

The WWE Championship has always been seen the ultimate prize of any wrestler in the business, and WrestleMania as the grandest stage to battle for the belt. So for there to not be a clash for the championship on the years biggest show, and more than anything for WrestleMania 1 to not set the standard for big title defences on the show, is an almost alien concept, and coupled with the existence of the World Heavyweight Championship as well, this is a feat that will never happen again.
