Hollywood loves a franchise reboot, and so does The Rock. Set for release on May 19th, 2017, Baywatch sees Rocky revive the '90s TV show alongside Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario, with original stars Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff also set to appear.

Baywatch has been in development since September 2012, though The Rock wasn't attached to the lead role until two years later. A change in director saw production speed-up considerably in 2015, and filming concluded back in May.

The lifeguard-themed television show last aired in 2001, and Hollywood has been trying to develop a big screen adaptation ever since. It sounds like the movie will be in-keeping with the show's ridiculousness: according to the studio, Rock plays a lifeguard who teams up with a "young rule-flouting hothead" to save his beach from an oil tycoon's destructive hands. A day-to-day occurrence for any budding lifeguard, we're sure...

Baywatch was once the world's most-watched television program, and it has been satirised and parodied in every way imaginable. For all its schmaltzy flaws, Baywatch was always a harmless watch, even if it did take itself a tad too seriously sometimes. Director Seth Goden's background (Horrible Bosses, Community, Modern Family) suggests that this won't be the case with the movie, however, and Baywatch will likely be rife with self-awareness.
