10 Upcoming Wrestling Stories That Are Already Doomed

6. The Hardys' WWE Return

Matt and Jeff Hardy returning to WWE appeared far from a done deal at the time of writing, but recently, on his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, the elder sibling claimed "there's still been some ongoing conversation with WWE."

In July, Matt told legendary wrestling journalist Bill Apter that he and Jeff were interested in capturing the NXT Tag Team Titles, referencing WWE development's ongoing partnership with TNA:

“Never say never in wrestling, and I will say that the NXT Tag Team Titles are not on our list of titles that we’ve won, so we’re interested in that. And I think this crossover between NXT and TNA is great. It’s exciting, it’s unpredictable, and I think that’s positive for the company and the industry.”

The Hardys, who left AEW when their contracts were allowed to expire earlier in 2024, have worked multiple TNA dates this summer. It's reasonable to infer from Matt's "never say never" comments that the duo would be interested in a WWE return, though the promotion's level of interest is a mystery, publically.

After a lacklustre AEW run blighted by Jeff's offscreen problems and rigours of age (The Hardys have worked an intense, gruelling style for decades now, taking a considerable toll on their bodies), one last WWE run is hard to sell. Even as big-name veterans putting other, younger teams over in AEW, Jeff and Matt were ineffective, suggesting their magic might just be gone.
