One of the things that has made New Day so entertaining during the past year-plus is the group’s willingness to take risks on the mic, to try different things and not be afraid to fail. Sometimes, that has worked out tremendously, resulting in side-splitting laughs and genuine cheers of delight.

Other times, it has resulted in groans and head-shaking. We got something closer to the latter Monday night, when New Day decided they would induct an honorary member into the group. They plucked a middle-aged man from the crowd and brought him into the ring. Big E joked around and asked for sonny boy’s name, only for it to turn out to be “Sonny Boy.”

That led to the “hilarious” confusion as the group thought the guy was being a smarta** by telling New Day his name over and over, with Big E saying that he wasn’t asking for the guy’s nickname or street name, and Xavier Woods asking if that was the name that was on the man’s utility bills.

It was a decent attempt at an Abbott & Costello routine, but it ultimately missed the mark. It just didn’t pan out, unfortunately.
