10 Ways To Fix WWE's Universal Title

7. Protect The Champion

Whoever ends up taking the Universal Title from Kevin Owens, it’s absolutely vital that they’re wrapped in cotton wool and booked like the most important wrestler in the company. Perhaps things would’ve panned out differently had Finn Balor not been injured, but KO was become a cowardly opportunist who prospers only through cheating and blind luck. He loses every non-title match he’s involved with, and he hasn’t had a credible win in months.

The Universal Champion should be presented as Raw’s best wrestler, but Owens has been portrayed as one of the most incompetent. WWE must completely reverse their booking practices for the next champion. He must feel like the best wrestler in the world, because if it’s impossible to take the champion seriously, it’s impossible to take the championship seriously.

WWE have developed an irritating habit of running their champions into the ground in recent years, and this is particularly problematic for a new belt like the Universal Title. It doesn’t have the WWE Championship’s history to fall back on, and at the moment, its legacy is defined by Finn Balor’s one-day reign, and KO’s flimsy run. It’ll take months to undo this damage as it stands, and another weak champion might make the Universal Title impossible to fix.
