WWE’s over-reliance on part-time performers was one of WrestleMania 33’s greatest issues, and nobody wants to see a repeat in New Orleans. Four of the night’s biggest matches featured ageing wrestlers who only dust off their wrestling boots once or twice a year, leaving a foul taste in many a fan’s mouth, and highlighting the company’s complete failure in building comparable stars over the last few years.

WWE’s broken star-making machine isn’t the only reason part-timers are relied on, however. ‘Mania is marketed towards the casual fanbase more than any other event on the wrestling calendar, and while hardcores may baulk at their presence, such performers can always be relied on to draw a nostalgic crowd, and excite those who remember their glory days.

The Rock is WWE’s best option for an appearance next year. Absent from this year’s event, he’s the biggest crossover star that the sport has ever produced, and while he shouldn’t wrestle in New Orleans, his presence will draw huge interest. Reel him out for the annual attendance announcement and keep him as far away from Erick Rowan as possible, and the crowd will take care of the rest.
