Why does WWE persist with these energy-sucking gimmick pay-per-views? There really is no reason to continue this nonsense. The gimmicks occupied have been devalued beyond repair, and pay-per-views now feel like re-runs of re-runs. Special attractions such as the steel cage, TLC and Money in the Bank are total dead-ends at this point. This is a company lacking in exciting reasons to tune in.

By removing the gimmick albatrosses from the monthly special events, WWE once again opens up the possibility of bringing these special attractions back to its weekly television. Now, you don't need to start spamming Hell in a Cell and TLC on throwaway episodes of RAW, but removing the predictability of the build-up to shows can only enhance the quality of weekly television.

It'll also force WWE to ramp up the animosity in its feuds ahead of utilising these big matches. Instead of 'we're having a Hell in a Cell match because its October', feuds will be built to a point where the violent gimmick match is the only answer. As things stand these gimmicks are little more than creative crutches, allowing a substandard writing team to coast along with little regard for the quality of the show it is creating.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
