The WWE Universe regularly boos John Cena out of the building. An example is SummerSlam 2014, when Cena got demolished by Brock Lesnar, and the crowd revelled in it. However, those boos were exactly what WWE wanted. Fans thought they were criticising WWE's choice of franchise star, but what they were actually doing, was justifying him. That's because WWE market Cena around his duality of character. You're a mark if you're reacting to him, because that's what WWE want you to do for "the most polarising superstar in WWE history" as Michael Cole puts it. All Cena narratives are now set up with the "polarising" aspect in mind, so whether you boo or cheer, it's what WWE are pulling you to do. The idea is that if you're into him, you'll want to watch him wrestle. If you hate him, you'll want to watch him get his ass kicked. So at SummerSlam, if you thought the wrong man was getting cheered, you were wrong. WWE always expected Brock Lesnar to get the plaudits and pops - that was the plan all along. Fans were marks for the heel, just as WWE had hoped.
