10 WCW Cruiserweight Matches You Should Watch

1. Eddie Guerrero V. Rey Mysterio, Jr. - Halloween Havoc 1997

This is probably everyone’s number one and the problem is none of the other matches top this one. When most WCW fans think of the Cruiserweights, this is the match they think of. Mysterio’s full body suit; Guerrero’s first run as a fantastic heel; Guerrero’s Cruiserweight title vs. Rey’s mask. Thirteen minutes and fifty-one seconds of some of the best wrestling you’ll ever see.

Rey showed an aggressiveness that no one had seen from him before, but in that, he also took some nasty bumps throughout the match. Eddie’s cold, calculated persona made his opposition to Rey even better. It looked like he was one step ahead of Rey the entire time. Submission moves and reversals were the antidote to Rey’s typical high-flying offense that Eddie used the entire time.

The spot of the match was Rey’s springboard backflip DDT that looks like it absolutely destroys Eddie’s face. Amazingly, the pace turns right back to Eddie and his focus of slowly dismantling Rey. Within this, Eddie also continuously tears at Rey’s face, trying to get the mask off him, almost succeeding while holding him in a camel clutch.

Near the end, Eddie starts to get frustrated with the referee and tries to hit power move after power move. When Eddie tries to hit a top rope Razor’s Edge powerbomb, Rey counters it into a hurricanrana and hooks Eddie’s left leg for the win. Of course, Eddie attacks Rey from behind and throws him out of the ring if only to hold a scowl that would define his career.
