Flip on the television to watch Raw or SmackDown, and you’ll see arenas packed to the rafters with fans and lit up brightly to highlight that fact.

It wasn’t always the case, as attendance at TV tapings were much more modest in previous years. Despite a decline in the number of live events, house show attendance average also was up last year. In fact, it was a near-historic year for WWE.

WWE’s 182 live events drew an estimated 1.66 million fans for an average attendance of 9,100 per event. That is the fifth-highest yearly average Wrestlenomics has tracked, going back 40 years. The only four years ranking higher? The most popular boom period in WWE history, 1998-2001.

Even as WWE looks to potentially cut back on live events, they overall seem to be an indicator of success and a popular product for the company.
