CM Punk was enduring the last run of his WWE career, and he was all kinds of p**sed off at the company. During the storyline of Paul Heyman's betrayal, Punk had an ill-founded window to vent some of that all too genuine rage.
Mid promo, he suddenly directed his attention towards a booing fan, and jettisoned all kinds of expletives, and boy, you could really see the rage on his face. It quickly turned into a challenge for the fan to step inside the ring and face the superstar one on one. Punk did not cease the abuse until he was visibly red with anger, and it was hardly the kind of audience relationship WWE wanted to promote, not that Punk gave a s**t at that point.
It's kind of tricky to gauge whether this outburst was actually necessary or not. It involved a man at the end of his wits and a guy who booed a little in excess, as passionate crowds often do. The punishment hardly fit the crime, but it happened nonetheless
