10 Weirdest WCW Nitro Main Events Ever
WWE's biggest competition put out some very strange stuff during the Monday Night War.
There was a time when, in terms of viewership, WCW Monday Nitro was the most popular wrestling show on America television.
For a number of weeks that may or may not be the name of a certain podcast, Nitro handed WWE Raw its backside through compelling storytelling, revolutionary cruiserweight action, and a little group called the NWO. Actually, they weren't that little. That was sort of the problem.
The show played host to some incredible main events during its time, as well as some that would ultimately sink the company into the ground, but that's not what this list is about. This list is here to celebrate the strangest matches to ever round out an episode of Nitro; the head-scratchers; the mind-bogglers; the what-was-Vince-Russo-thinking?-ers; some of the weirdest matches in WCW history.
For clarity's sake, a "main event" is counted as the final match on the card, regardless of whether or not it was the final segment, and all of these matches come from Nitro's lifespan between September 1995 and March 2001.
Get used to hearing about the year 2000 a lot... like a lot.
10. Sid Vicious vs Tank Abbott - February 28th 2000
Vince Russo is one of the most divisive figures in the wrestling world for a number of reasons.
The original "bro" (not Matt Riddle) was responsible for some of the best moments of WWE programming during the Attitude Era, but is also credited with helping to destroy WCW in its final years.
One of his more bonkers ideas whilst working for Ted Turner was to crown the inexperienced and frankly terrible former UFC fighter Tank Abbott as WCW Champion. This pitch was so poorly received by company management that Russo was removed as head writer and then quit the promotion when asked to work as part of a committee.
This nightmare scenario almost came true on the February 28th 2000 edition of Nitro, where Abbott squared off against world champ, the late great Sid Vicious - with Sid's gold on the line.
Much to the delight of everyone not named Tank or Vince, the cage-fighter was beaten in under four minutes in a match that could best be described as "ropey".
Abbott would go on to join the boy band faction 3 Count, any dreams of a world title reign permamently crushed.
