10 Weirdest Wrestling Characters (That Actually Worked)

9. Dude Love

Dude Love, the peace loving, disco hippy goodtime God alter ego of Hardcore Legend Mick Foley would have been a tough sell for anybody to portray except Foley, a man who had earned his audience€™s unswerving devotion and respect, many times over. Originally created by Mick during his youth, when the shy young man would actually dress/act like The Dude in social scenarios, the character of Dude Love wasn€™t interested in blood, guts and violence like his €˜friends€™ Cactus Jack or Mankind, he just wanted to get the girls and have a good time, plain and simple. After some home movies of a young Foley playing The Dude made their way backstage, Mick was encouraged to portray the character for WWF audiences, presenting him as hokey, nerdy and stupid - yet somehow painfully unaware of these traits. No matter how lame he might have been, The Dude was always super-confident about himself, which made the fans love him all the more, because everybody knows someone like that, don€™t they? He may have worn tie-dye to the ring, his sunglasses may have slid down his face occasionally (due to his lack of an ear) and he may have utilized arguably the crappiest finisher of all time in the much-feared €˜Sweet Shin Music€™, but The Dude was still a blast every time he appeared on WWF television. Ow, have mercy!

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
