10 Weirdest WWE Tryout Stories
6. MJF Was Told He Was Too Young

Former (and longest-reigning) AEW World Champion MJF is one of the best mic workers in the pro wrestling business. He has delivered numerous scathing heel promos throughout his career, and the one directed at William Regal on the 18 October 2022 episode of Dynamite might've revealed a bit of history between the two in WWE.
MJF has never competed in WWE as an in-ring performer, but is known for appearing as an extra in a backstage segment with Samoa Joe in NXT. During the promo, MJF recalled Regal pulling him aside after a WWE tryout and telling him that he was too young for WWE. Regal allegedly told him to hone his craft in the independent scenes but asked him to continue to send him tapes so he could monitor his progress.
MJF revealed he took Regal's advice and continued to send footage of his matches. However, after a few months, MJF claimed that he received a discouraging email from Regal that almost made him quit the business. It's unclear if the story is true or part of a scripted promo, similar to his controversial car crash story.
