Cena def. Edge at the 2006 Royal Rumble You could make a legitimate argument for several of John Cena's 11 WWE title wins, including the afore mentioned two against Randy Orton and Del Rio in 2009 and 2011 but perhaps the reign that drew the most immediate vitriol from the fans was his second. Cena's first reign as WWE champion lasted 280 days between Wrestlemania 21 and Edge cashing in the very first Money in the Bank contract at New Year's Revolution 2006. During that reign, Cena found himself going from a hero in the eyes of the IWC to their most hated enemy- a role he still operates to this date. Spurned by the changes in Cena's character from his Thug Life gimmick that made him famous to the superman that he's become in the modern years, the fans rejected WWE's obvious attempts to make Cena into superman. It was with great glee, then, that Edge finally ended Cena's reign with the inaugural cash in. What followed were three weeks of Raw programming during which WWE saw the rating pass into the 4.1 range. Live sex celebrations, TLC matches, Edge seemed to be doing the business. It was with some surprise then that an undeterred WWE reverted back to their original plan to go with Cena vs Triple H at Wrestlemania when they returned the title to Cena after only 21 days at the 2006 Royal Rumble. Only serving to further infuriate the IWC, Cena would be roundly booed against Hunter in Chicago- a scenario you would've thought absurd not a year earlier. Cena's 2nd reign ultimately ended in June that year during a very famous match against Rob Van Dam at the 2nd ECW One Night Stand. If you've never seen that match, go look it up now. It was the most one-sided crowd in WWE history and one of Cena's best matches.
