10 Worst AEW Booking Decisions
5. Anthony Ogogo Vs Cody Rhodes
At times the histrionic Codyverse was a point of contention for many AEW fans who were not partial to the over-the-top nature of Rhodes' presentation, promos, and often his matches. Cody's heavily dramatic presentation was useful at the start of AEW's life as he was genuinely the biggest babyface star in wrestling in the form of his life. However, a year or two into the company's existence many grew tired of his style and this led to him getting John Cena-Esque mixed reactions.
The Codyverse reached its nonsensical peak in early 2021 when Rhodes faced former Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo in a disappointingly passé feud. Cody’s promos were needlessly patriotic, depicting Ogogo as a foreign menace because he is British.
The feud could have been worthwhile if Ogogo got the win but he was soundly defeated by Rhodes only to disappear from AEW television, only making sporadic appearances on television since then. The 'American Nightmare' was often accused of going over talent and killing their momentum, which was mostly unfair in hindsight. However, the feud with Ogogo will not reflect kindly on an otherwise stellar run in AEW for Cody.
