10 Worst Booked WWE Champions Of All Time
6. Chris Benoit
The closing moments of WrestleMania XX with Chris Benoit celebrating winning the World Title as he embraced WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero was one of the most emotional moments in WWE history. With that being said, how Benoit was booked following the win would be met with mixed reviews by fans at the time and looking back 16-years later, it does raise the question of whether or not Vince McMahon ever truly saw Benoit as a top guy.
Benoit had a lengthy run as champion. His title run came in at 154 days, which for the Ruthless Aggression Era was some achievement. The problem was that during his reign, he was always playing second fiddle to another story. For instance, his first singles feud was with Kane and the PPV match between the two wasn’t the main event; instead Triple H and Shawn Michaels’ 45 minute Hell in a Cell match was put in the position instead.
Then following the Kane feud, Benoit would feud with Triple H. However, Benoit nor the World Title was the focal point of the feud. Instead the focus point would be surrounding whether Eugene was going to realise that Triple H wasn’t actually his friend. Benoit was the third most important man in the story, despite being World Champion. Just a month later, Benoit’s incredibly underwhelming World Title run would come to an end as Randy Orton became the youngest World Champion in company history at just 24-years of age.
