10 Worst Booking Decisions In SummerSlam History
2. Headlined By A Wedding
Our earliest entry on the list comes from 1991, when
SummerSlam returned to its spiritual home of Madison Square Garden.
The show hosted a number of major match-ups, including one of the greatest Intercontinental Championship bouts of all time between Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect, as well as a star-studded main event handicap match, as Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior teamed to face the Iraqi sympathisers, Sgt. Slaughter, General Adnan, and Colonel Mustafa.
And yet, despite all that, the main event of the show was the kayfabe wedding of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth—who were of course already married in real life.
The wedding itself was as ridiculous as you’d expect from the WWE, with Jake Roberts and The Undertaker running the obligatory interferences—although at least they waited until after the vows. Still, it’s the sheer concept of having a wedding closing out such a huge event that sees this one feature on the list.
An episode of Raw I could understand, but even a B-level PPV would be a stretch—so for the second biggest show on the WWE's calendar to close with a segment other than a match isn’t a great piece of booking in my eyes.
